Indian Army To Participate in ‘ZAPAD-21’ Exercises in Russia

The Indian Army contingent will form a part of ‘ZAPAD 2021’, a multi-nation military exercise to be held at Nizhny in Russia. It will begin on 3 September 2021 and is targeted towards enhancing Anti-Terror cooperation among the countries.

As per officials, ZAPAD 2021 will be a 13-day exercise, and will come to end on 16 September. The military exercise is centered around Anti-terror operations and involves participation of a dozen nations. Speculations are made of China and Pakistan joining the same as observers.

On 1 September, the Indian army briefed the nation on details of the exercise via a tweet, “ Indian Army contingent will participate in multi-nation exercise ZAPAD 2021, being held at Russia from 03 to 16 September 2021. More than a dozen countries from Eurasia and South Asia will also participate in the same exercise”.

The Indian Army contingent will include 200 personal, according to a statement by Defence ministry.

It said,  “Zapad is one of the theatre level exercises of the Russian armed forces and will focus primarily on operations against terrorists”.

On further clarification on aim of the exercise the ministry said, “ the Naga battalion group participating  in the exercise, will feature on all Arms combined task force. The exercise aims to enhance military and strategic choice among the participating Nations”.

The Naga Regiment is an infantry regiment of the Indian Army. It is among the youngest regiments, – the first battalion was raised in Ranikhet in 1970.

Going forward about the training schedule of Indian contingent ministry said, “ the Indian contingent has been put through a strenuous training schedule which encompasses all facets of conventional operations including mechanised, airborne and heliborne, counterterrorism combat conditioning and firing”.

Indo-Kazakh military exercise, ‘KAZIND 21’

Indian Army also started a 13-day military exercise on 1 September 2021.

“The India-Kazakhstan joint military exercise “KAZIND 21” comment today at training Node Aisha Bibi, Kazakhstan”, as per an official.

After the fourth edition of the exercise named KAZIND-2019, which took place at Pithoragarh in September 2019, this came as the fifth edition of annual bilateral exercise by both the Armies.

The Indian Army participants consist of 90 Personnel from Bihar regiment. The Bihar Regiment was formed in 1941 by regularizing the 11th Battalion, the 19th Hyderabad Regiment, and raising new battalions.

A military exercise is the employment of military resources in training for military operations, either exploring the effects of warfare or testing strategies without actual combat. They help countries to share combat strategies and new military engagement techniques. It helps them to brush up their military capabilities.
