QUAD Pledges 1.2 bn Vaccine Doses To Crisis Hit World

On Friday, QUAD leaders in a joint in-person summit at Washington, pledged to donate 1.2 Billion Covid-19 Vaccine doses to the world.

The group has already provided 79 million doses under COVAX Facility.

COVAX, is a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines directed by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, and the World Health Organization.

The QUAD vaccine program was launched in March this year, with financial and logistics support from all constituent member nations.

Japan continues to help it’s neighbors to procure vaccines under Tokyo’s $3.3 Billion Covid-19 crisis response emergency support loan. Along with it, Australia will provide $212 Million grant in aid for procuring doses for South East Asia and the Pacific.

“In line with our March announcement, and recognizing the continuing global supply gap, we will ensure this expanded manufacturing is exported for the Indo-Pacific and the world, and we will coordinate with key multilateral initiatives, such as the COVAX Facility, to procure proven safe, effective and quality-assured Covid-19 vaccines for low- and middle-income countries,” a joint statement announced.

Expressing gratitude towards India for resuming the vaccine supplies, the group said, “The QUAD also welcomes India’s announcement to resume exports of safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines, including to COVAX, beginning in October 2021.”

The group analysed the extent of global suffering and promised to be better prepared for future Pandemics. It said in a joint statement, “COVID has caused continued global suffering; climate crisis has accelerated; regional security has become ever-more complex, testing all of our countries individually and together. But cooperation remains unflinching.”

“We will continue to build coordination for health-security efforts in the Indo-Pacific, and we will jointly conduct at least one pandemic preparedness tabletop or exercise in 2022”, leaders of 4 member nations reaffirmed.

The QUAD, officially the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, is a group of four countries: the United States, Australia, India, and Japan.
